Fostering Adolescent Development in Middle Schools

Middle School and Junior High Education

Many schools that include grades 7 through 8 are referred to as middle schools or, more commonly, junior highs. Regardless of the name, they share a focus on adolescent development.

When Paul Cuffee students break school rules–clogging a toilet, for instance–they’re asked which one they violated and how to fix it. This frank discussion of values and emotions, experts say, has paid off.

Academics

In some parts of the country, middle schools include only grades 7 and 8. In others, they’re combined with elementary school. Still, a good middle school (or “junior high”) focuses on both academics and values.

The academics must be rigorous, but they also must respect students’ cognitive capacities and social-emotional needs. Two programs, Advancement Via Individual Determination and Schoolwide Enrichment Model, help students—particularly those who will be the first in their families to attend college—build skills through their elective courses.

But even without these kinds of supplemental programs, some researchers have found that a lack of rigor in the middle grades can stifle student achievement. And when students fail in the middle grades, their chances of graduating from high school and going to college plummet. (See Getting to Graduation). As a result, many high-performing middle schools have adopted strategies that increase rigor and support social-emotional development. One example is Paul Cuffee, a high-achieving school in Boston that requires students to follow certain principles. When a student violates one of them—say, by clogging the toilet—the principal talks to them about it, rather than sending them to detention.

Social/Emotional Learning

A growing consensus in education is that schools should attend to students’ social-emotional development. This is reflected in recent policy decisions at the state and federal levels (e.g., the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015).

Early adolescence is a critical time for fostering social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies, but the number of evidence-based SEL programs available to middle school students remains limited. Additionally, the majority of these programs have a limited research base and often report null effects.

To address these challenges, we studied ten middle schools with strong student-reported SEL results and high achievement gains among African American and Latinx students in Grades 6-8. The schools are characterized by a focus on fostering healthy coping and problem-solving skills that can help students navigate the challenges of middle school, the transition to high school, and beyond. A key question is whether these approaches can mitigate the well-documented achievement tumble that occurs when young adolescents make the transition from elementary to middle school.

Character Development

While it is easy to focus on reducing problems like bullying, fighting, and harassment in schools, we should also look at character development. Students learn from the behavior of their teachers, and if they see educators modeling virtuous behaviors, it is easier for them to copy those traits.

Character development is a complex process that involves moral cognition, other-regarding social-emotional skills (e.g., perspective-taking), and self-regarding social-emotional strengths (e.g., self-regulation). Research shows that the character strengths of hope, bravery, teamwork, and self-regulation are important for students to flourish in their communities.

In a study of Brazilian classrooms, teacher-reported student-student relationships and SEL were related to both classroom baseline character strengths and change over time. This multi-level model accounted for gender, grade level, and teachers’ utilization of specific socio-emotional techniques. The findings indicated that both teacher-student relationships and student-student relationships were associated with the initial character strength levels, with higher quality relationships predicting a stronger increase in character strengths over time.

Community

A strong community is an important part of a student’s life. One way to build this community is through community involvement projects. One school’s students help in an AppleCorps program that offers work experiences to local youth, a way for the kids to hang out together, and opportunities to bridge age and cultural differences.

Middle schools usually have separate grades 7 through 8. In some regions, these schools are called “junior high schools.” In other regions, these grades may be combined with grade 6 in a single school. Core Knowledge Middle School Science provides rich literacy readings and activities that allow teachers to implement the three-dimensional approach to science learning recommended by the National Research Council and in the Next Generation Science Standards. Exciting transition to middle school: grades 6-8. Increased independence, new friends, and more choices in clubs, sports, and academics.

October 24, 2023 0 Comments

Middle School – Grades 6 to 8

Moving to middle school can be an exciting time for students. They look forward to increased independence, new friends, and more choices in clubs and sports.

Parents can help their kids make a smooth transition to middle school by visiting the schools before Orientation Day in the fall. It’s a good idea to visit more than once.

Academics

Grades six through eight offer students a development-focused learning environment designed to provide students with the foundation for success in high school. Students explore and build upon their abilities to find and impose structure, question and verify, comprehend cause and effect, generalize, and synthesize abstract ideas.

Students learn at their own developmental timetable in math, with two levels offered per grade based on readiness for abstract concepts. Placement in these levels is determined by a combination of factors including STARS assessment results, teacher observation/recommendation and student interest.

Middle schools that offer accelerated courses must indicate this on the student transcript by using the appropriate course code for the grade level they are taking (see this guidance for more information). In addition, students with special circumstances such as ELLs with an interrupted/inconsistent formal education and students who participate in alternate assessments may be held to different promotion criteria.

Athletics

Students are offered a wide variety of interscholastic sports. This program provides an excellent opportunity to develop a young adolescent’s self-esteem, citizenship, and responsibility through teamwork, cooperation, and leadership. It should also be enjoyable, vigorous, and safe in a positive environment under the guidance of qualified adults.

Any student in grades 7 and 8 who wishes to participate on a middle school team must have a physical exam on file. Students will need to upload the physical to their Family ID registration prior to the start of each season.

All students are encouraged to participate in our athletic programs. However, remember that wearing your school colors is a privilege and not a right. We ask that parents and spectators respect the coaches, players and other athletes by refraining from competition for attention during practices or games. If you have a concern, please speak directly with the coach. If necessary, the athletic office will help to arrange a meeting.

Fine Arts

Middle school is an exciting time as students manage newfound independence and responsibility both in the classroom and outside of it. They join athletic teams, participate in theater productions and bring novel ideas to our Spark Tank incubator.

Students in grades six through eight take a semester arts elective each year, which includes art, music and theatre/drama. The arts classes support a transition from weekly elementary art to a more focused approach to learning, while providing opportunities for students to become goal-directed and resilient individuals.

Our middle school band and choir program is open to all grade levels through an audition process. Grades 7 and 8 band students continue to build on their musical skills by learning and practicing different styles of music, while also participating in a Christmas concert and spring concert as well as local events. Choir students learn basic choral techniques and put on full length musicals with the help of other students who are involved in set building, costumes, and lighting.

California’s local educational agencies (LEAs) serve a diverse population of young children with varied needs and experiences. Many of these children are low-income, and a large percentage are dual language learners. The challenge for LEAs is to ensure that access and enrollment equity is a central focus of the Universal PreKindergarten (UPK) implementation, while also connecting UPK to broader goals and strategies that will lead to sustainable outcomes for all young children.

One way to do this is to integrate UPK into the district LCAP. This will allow districts to systematically focus on alignment, partnership development, and whole child approaches in the early grades. Additionally, integrating UPK into the district LCAP can support efforts to strengthen and align P-3 systems to sustain the gains and outcomes of UPK. This section highlights key considerations for UPK integration into the LEA’s LCAP, including models for integration based on local bright spots.

Math Games for Middle School Students

October 23, 2023 0 Comments

Middle School Math Games

Get students moving with this fun order of operations game. Divide the class into two teams – boys versus girls, for example – and have them stand up when you call out a problem.

Players draw questions from a bag or container and answer them. The first team to earn a certain number of points wins!

Dice Games

Dice-based math games offer students the chance to practice and engage with important concepts in a low-stress environment. They are also a great way to introduce new topics in a way that is more interactive and engaging for tweens.

For example, the product number game allows students to work on multiplying while they roll two dice. They must decide whether to keep the number at face value or multiply it by 10. The first team to reach 101 wins.

Another great dice game for students is the place value game. Players take turns rolling two dice and finding the sum. They must then record the number on a place value chart. After each turn, players must find all of the other factor pairs for the number rolled.

Around the Block

Students can practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with this fun game. It is played in teams and can get quite competitive.

This great game works for any grade level and requires no special materials other than a set of flash cards. The players are “students” who compete against other fictional students around the world to answer multiplication problems in a certain number of seconds.

Get students moving with this math game that helps them build their mental math muscles by using integers, decimals and fractions to mark on a beach ball. Use it for math enrichment, review or review day activities and even indoor recess. It is a great way to practice evaluating expressions, too.

Simon Says

Playing Simon Says is a fun way for students to learn about the human body and its parts. The game can also be used to practice vocabulary as students listen and follow a series of commands that include opening your orifice, moving your liver and wagging your phalanges (fingers and toes).

Group students into teams and give them each a meter stick. They then look around the room for items they think will add up to a certain number. If the number is prefaced by “Simon says,” they must stand up; if not, they stay seated.

Incorporate color instructions to make the game more challenging and help students learn about color recognition. Also try incorporating physical challenges to appeal to kinesthetic learners and help them develop better balance and movement skills.

Math Goodies

If you’re looking for fun, engaging math games to keep students engaged and learning, consider some of these. Free to Discover offers a variety of interactive lessons and tasks that appeal to diverse learners. They use a problem-solving approach to help students master complex concepts, such as understanding percent.

Play a game called Back-to-Back to practice adding and multiplication. One student is selected to stand in front of the board and write a number. All other students can give the player clues, such as the product of two numbers, to help him or her guess correctly. The first person to guess the number wins.

Practice multiplication facts with a game that uses music and a balloon. Another active game that helps students understand fractions involves putting integer cards on a poster board and asking the class to dance around them, placing their left foot on the tens line and their right on the units line.

Graphing

Graphing is an important skill for middle school students and one that can be taught through fun math games. Students can also learn about the interplay between different representations of relationships by working with graphing activities.

One popular way to get students interested in graphing is to show them a video of an everyday event such as a glass filling with water, a piece of salmon cooking in the oven or the speed of a bike moving down a hill and then have them sketch how they think the line will shape in a graph. The sketches are then discussed as a class.

The stories can be viewed and graphed online by students from all over the world and teachers have reported that not only do the students love this activity, but they also learn to read graphs better.
